What are prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics, and how do they help?
Prebiotics: Prebiotics are non-digestible fibres that serve as food for beneficial bacteria in your horse's gut. They help stimulate the growth and activity of these beneficial bacteria, promoting a healthy balance of gut microflora. In horses, maintaining a healthy gut flora is crucial for proper digestion and nutrient absorption, as well as supporting the immune system.
Probiotics: Probiotics are live microorganisms that help populate the gut with beneficial bacteria, especially useful after episodes of stress, illness, or antibiotic treatment which can disrupt the natural balance of gut microflora. Probiotics can aid in the digestion of fibre and other nutrients, reduce the risk of digestive upset, and enhance overall gut health.
Postbiotics: Postbiotics are the metabolic by-products of probiotic microorganisms. They include substances like short-chain fatty acids, enzymes, and organic acids that can have beneficial effects on the gut environment. Postbiotics can help improve gut barrier function, modulate the immune system, and inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria in the gut.
